Yom Kippur is a Fast Day With A Message. At Masbia We Feed The Needy Before and After.
Post on: September 10, 2024In the lead up to Yom Kippur and after the holiday, Masbia staff and volunteers work tirelessly to meet various needs. Those who cannot cook for themselves get ready-cooked holiday meals with all the traditional foods. For Yom Kippur the Yom Tov menu includes round challah, honey, salmon, gefilte fish, chicken soup with kreplach, beef, shlishkes, kugels, tzimmes, wine, beverages, dips, and desserts.
Masbia feeding the needy for Yom Kippur has been featured in many media outlets. You can check them out here.
Feeding the needy is a core part of the Yom Kippur message. In the Yom Kippur Haftorah we read from the prophet Isaiah: “Share your bread with the hungry.” He goes on to emphasize that, above all, caring for those in need, particularly feeding the hungry, is what Hashem truly values.
הֲלוֹא זֶה צוֹם אֶבְחָרֵהוּ… הֲלוֹא פָרֹס לָרָעֵב לַחְמֶךָ… אָז יִבָּקַע כַּשַּׁחַר אוֹרֶךָ…
By sponsoring and supporting ready-to-eat meals at Masbia, you are directly answering the prophet’s call, embodying the true spirit of Yom Kippur, and fulfilling this sacred mitzvah. Masbia is seeking to raise $24,300 to cover the cooked meals served before and after Yom Kippur. That means we will be serving three meals, known as Seudos. We estimate each Seuda to have 50 guests at each location.
To sponsor one guest for one traditional holiday meal is $54. To sponsor an entire Seuda for 50 people is $2,700. To sponsor Seudos for 50 people at all three locations is $8,100. That makes the three Seudos – two before and one after – of Yom Kippur at all three locations $24,300. Our interactive website allows you to choose the donation size that works best for you. Sponsorship options include a single meal, ten meals, fifty meals, or the entire four hundred fifty meals we need for Yom Kippur. You could even choose which meal you want to apply your sponsorship to, as well as the location you wish to sponsor. Check it out here.
To cover the entire High Holiday season Masbia is seeking to raise $963,000. This includes $720,000 to sponsor 10,000 holiday packages at $72 each and $243,000 for cooked holiday meals ($54 a traditional cooked holiday meal x 50 people x 3 locations x 30 Seudas = $243,000). Considering volunteer labor and in-kind donations, the value of our total output for the High Holiday season is estimated to be closer to $2,000,000.
There are many meaningful sponsorship options. You can choose to sponsor holiday meals, even select the day and location; or you can choose to sponsor holiday packages with a matching grant, maximizing your charitable impact. You also have the option of turning your donation into a digital Shana Tova card or a digital Ushpizin gift to someone special. Click here.
