The Packer: Apple donations help families celebrate Passover

The New York Apple Association, Fishers, and New York Apple Sales, Castleton, N.Y., are donating apples to ensure that families can make charoset for Passover Seder this year.Charoset is a traditional food served during Seder, the evening ritual that observes the beginning of Passover. Charoset is a made of sweetened fruits, nuts and spices.

The New York Apple Association and New York Apple Sales will both be donating more than 3,000 pounds each of apples to Masbia, a nonprofit soup kitchen and food pantry based in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Masbia staff and volunteers will package the apples with other charoset ingredients into kits for 2,500 families to take home.
Masbia plans to distribute 180,000 meals worth more than $600,000 for this Passover.
